Peteris Vasks put Dona nobis pacem ('Give us peace') set to music in 1996. The text consists of only these three words; these three words were enough to express what Vasks wanted to say.
Are Dona nobis pacem is written in traditional sounds. Vasks had left his experimental period behind him. Vasks was increasingly concerned with something being said (musically); he was less and less concerned with how it was said. Vasks uses church music preferably alone strings, which gives sufficient “heaviness” to the composition, but also keeps the music light.
